Reflections: Clarity

Clarity is often treated like a destination, a moment where everything suddenly makes perfect sense. But most of life does not unfold that neatly. More often, clarity is something we build while moving through uncertaintly, making small decisions, paying attention, and adjusting as we go.

Navigating ambiguity requires both action and adaptation. We rarely have the full map ahead of us, but small steps forward can reveal what the next step needs to be. As author E. L. Doctorow once wrote, “It’s like driving a car at night. You never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”

There is wisdom in allowing clarity to arrive gradually. Reflection helps. Experience helps. Staying open to learning helps. Often, we do not think our way into clarity; we move our way into it, one thoughtful step at a time.

Practice: Create a "Stillness Window" for Clarity

Clarity doesn't always arrive through more thinking. Sometimes it shows up when the mental noise has a place to settle. This practice is about intentionally creating short, repeatable pockets of stillness where you can hear yourself more clearly.

Try setting aside a 5–15 minute “stillness window” once a day, where the only goal is to pause input and reduce decision-making. No optimizing it, no turning it into productivity time—just space.

Here are a few simple ways to do it:

  • Sit without input: No phone, no music, no reading. Just sit somewhere familiar and notice what arises—thoughts, sensations, or even boredom. Let them pass without following them.

  • Walk without a destination: Take a short walk without headphones or a set route. Let your attention drift gently to what you notice: light, sound, pace of your steps.
