Reflections: Confidence

Confidence is often imagined as certainty, but real confidence is usually built another way: through learning. Every mistake, missed expectation, awkward attempt, or imperfect outcome carries information. Setbacks are not evidence that we are incapable; they are data points that help us recalibrate, refine, and better understand ourselves and the world around us.
Growth rarely moves in a straight line. It loops, stalls, stretches, and starts again. When we begin to see failure as part of the learning process instead of a verdict on our worth, reflection becomes more useful than self-criticism. We can ask: What did this teach me? What needs adjusting? What did I not know before?
Over time, confidence grows not because we avoid mistakes, but because we develop trust in our ability to learn from them. Like tree rings forming through changing seasons, each experience adds another layer of understanding, resilience, and capacity for growth.
Practice: Become a Beginner Again

Choose one activity you are not naturally good at and commit to trying it for a short period of time. It could be drawing, dancing, rock climbing, knitting, learning a language, cooking a new recipe, or anything that stretches you beyond familiarity.
As you practice, notice the urge to judge yourself for not being immediately skilled. Instead of asking, “Am I good at this?” try asking, “What am I learning?” Pay attention to small shifts: increased patience, curiosity, adaptability, or willingness to keep going despite discomfort.
The goal is not mastery. The goal is building a relationship with learning itself.
